H ow to help our trainees develop more effective techniques when they are reading in English? Simply by telling them how to practice the 4 main ways of reading that most people use all the time.

4 MAIN WAYS OF READING

skimming :  reading a text quickly to get the gist of the text, the main idea. Reading only the title and the first sentence of every paragraph is how we can do it. This technique is good practice and  will help the students recognize the purpose and the structure of a whole text.

scanning :  looking through a text to find specific information. This will prevent the students to read from the begining of a long text right through the end and easily get discouraged because they do not understand every word.

extensive reading :  people often have to practice extensive reading to get a global understanding of long texts. This naturally implies ability for skimming.

intensive reading :  reading shorter texts in more details. Will enable to help the students develop more detailed reading skills such as working  out the meaning of unknown words.
