WHAT ARE SMILEYS?
A smiley or emoticon is a sort of logo, or drawing, usually obtained by means of a computer keyboard. Most smileys represent facial expressions because they are meant to show the feelings of the person using them. As body language can be used in real conversation, so smileys can be used in computer communication and e-mail.

PICTURES & ICONS
Smileys and emoticons are often represented in the form of small animated pictures or "gifs" (graphic interchange format) which you can buy on the internet. A lot of them can be obtained for free and downloaded from the internet by using "save as" in the "file menu" of your computer. (^_°)
