PUNCTUALITY
"If you're there before it's over, you're on time." - James J. Walker
1. What is punctuality?
To be punctual means to be on time, that is neither early nor late. When we do something at the time fixed, we are punctual- our work is on time, our money is where it is supposed to be on time; we pay our bills, and we are actually present at the appointed moment. The opposite of punctuality is lateness or tardiness.
2. When must we consider that somebody is late? People do not have the same opinion about what it means to be on time. A recent survey indicates that in Germany, a person is considered to be late at a business appointment after 10 minutes. In Japan you must be on the dot ! Actually, it all depends on the kind of rendez vous. Being on time for the beginning of classes or at a job interview is not the same as being on time to meet a friend or a dated lover at the pub. There is a rule of thumb that different appointment situations certainly allow of people's different attitudes towards promptness and time flexibility.
3. What do people say about tardiness?
"I had a flat tyre" or "A train was late" are often heard excuses when people are late. Some people think that being late is stealing other people's lives. People generally get tired of the couldn't-care-less attitude of latecomers.
4. What can we do?
A good planning will enable you to be punctual. A good way to be on time is to always be early. Allow enough time to get there a little early just in case anything happens. Being there on time will show that you respect the person you wil see. If you know you will be late, it is good to call ahead.
