MORE PREPOSITIONS WITHOUT RULES

Here are some more idioms using prepositions without rules. Read the explanations. Can you find the equivalents for these idioms  in the language of your country?

out of date 

We say that something is out of date when it is old-fashioned and no longer useful.  

up to date 

opposite of out of date

 

in my opinion 

You add  "in my opinion" to a statement to emphasize that it is what you think, and not necessarily a fact

 

from my point of view 

When you want to emphasize that you are stating a personal opinion  

on the bus

= by bus  : We came on the bus.  

on foot   

means "walking" : They came on foot .NOT ….by foot.  

on purpose     

Something done  on purpose is done  deliberately and not by accident or chance "He did that on purpose!"  

by mistake 

When you goof !

 

by chance/ accident  

Not on purpose. Something  happening by chance or by accident  happens without anyone planning it or doing anything to make it happen. "Are you by any chance the new teacher?"    

on the way

In the course of the journey that you are making somewhere "She was on her way home."  

in the way

Blocking the way or being a nuisance , disturbing you when you are trying to do something "The chidren were getting in the way."  

under way

It has begun and is now taking place " Negotiations are under way."  

by the way

You say it when you add something to what you are saying, especially a question or a piece of information that you have just thought of.  

to an  end

If something comes to an end it stops "And here the story comes to an end."  

at the end

If something is at the end , it is finished and will not continue.  

on end

Something that makes your hair stand on end or rise makes you very frightened or worried
