The expression was coined after Guy Fawkes whose figure is burnt each year on the same night. Guy Fawkes, who was a member of a Catholic group, had hatched the Gunpowder Plot and  planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and to kill King James I. The Gunpowder Plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was arrested in 1605 before carrying out his plan.
