1.  Excelsior  

 The motto of New York state is Excelsior. You can see it inscribed on the white ribbon in the blazon on the left. This word expresses the idea of reaching upward to higher goals. The river on the shield is the Hudson river, and the mountains over which a sun rises are the Hudson highlands. The globe over which  an eagle is resting represents the Western Hemisphere. Liberty and Justice emblazon the state coat of arms. The goddess Liberty is the one  holding  a pole with a Liberty Cap on top. She stands for freedom. The discarded crown  at her feet represents freedom from England at the end of the revolutionary war. On the right, the goddess, Justice wears a blindfold and carries the scales of justice, meaning that everyone receives equal treatment under the law.

Women were forbidden to be present , and the male contestants were naked.

The French Baron Pierre de Coubertin revived  the modern Olympic Games which were interrupted during  both world wars.

 The Olympic emblem of five interlaced circles represents the five continents.
