After the US broke from GB in 1776, the English started to give the name of Uncle Sam to every man living in North America, and the nickname stayed with them.
It comes from Samuel Uncle, a fervent patriot, who joined the Army during the war of 1812. The soldiers soon associated his name with the United States."Uncle Sam" stuck and became a symbol.
It comes from Samuel Wilson, who supplied the Army with beef. Uncle Sam used to stamp each barrel, "U.S.", to show that the meat belonged to the U.S. However, the grateful soldiers on the receiving end naturally associated their "U.S." supplied rations with "Uncle Sam".
