WHAT IS PUNCTUALITY ?
To be punctual means to be on
time, that is neither early nor late. When we do
something at the time fixed, we are punctual- our work is on time, our
money is where it is supposed to be on time; we pay our bills, and we are
actually present at the appointed
moment. The opposite of punctuality is lateness or
tardiness.
CULTURAL ISSUE
When must we consider that somebody is
late? People do not have the same opinion about what it means to be on time.A
recent survey indicates that in Germany, a person is considered to be late at a
business appointment after 10 minutes. In Japan you must be on
the dot ! Actually, It all depends on the kind of rendez
vous. Being on
time for the beginning of classes or at a job interview is not the same as
being on time to meet a friend or a dated
lover at the pub. There is a
rule of thumb that different
appointment situations certainly allow of people's different attitudes towards
promptness and time flexibility.
