WHAT IS HAIKU ?

Haiku is an unrhymed Japanese verse form of three short lines containing  5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively. The haiku poet usually talks about  the changes of nature, and most haiku have a word that makes you think of a season. It is a very short poetic form, probably the shortest in the world.Writing and reading haiku makes you feel spiritual. It is derived from Yûgen ( ineffable mystery ), a Japanese ideal and practice aiming at, and complying with  moments of spiritual eternity and truth.

HOW  TO WRITE HAIKU

Keep in mind the haiku form and pattern
a) no rhyme and no metaphor b) one season word (eg  winter in the example below)
c) 3 short lines

Hawk  preens its feathers (5 syllables)
First  winter rain pours down the earth (7 syllables)
Wetty  leaves calm down  (5 syllables)

d)  17 syllables . If you add one line of 7 syllables to an haiku , you get a tanka, another unrhymed Japanese verse form  of 5 short lines containing 5, 7, 5, 7 and 7 syllables respectively.

Adopt a step by step procedure

1. Think of as many season words as you can for winter, spring , summer or fall.
2. Now write three lines. You must keep them short. Use just a few nouns and verbs. You don't need to use adjectives. Line one and two should be different images. Use line 3 to bring them together, and  give your readers a strong image.

Here are some examples of haiku. What season is it?

Colder than the snow

Wintry moon is reflecting

on my whitening hair

                 Jôsô

Very first days of spring

Fording the brook

A solitary heron

Hekigodô

Old as I am though

Even in front of scarecrows

I am ashamed

Issa

Even the rabbit

Has got a dangling ear

How hot it is!

 Akutagawa Ryûnosuke

The wind tumbled it

I set it upright. It fell

The scarecrow fell

Otsuyû

Now it's your turn...
