"law
of parsimony"
A
rule in science and philosophy stating that entities should not be
multiplied needlessly. This rule is interpreted to mean that the simplest of two or more competing theories is preferable and
that an explanation for unknown phenomena should first be attempted in
terms of what is already known. Also called Ockham's
razor or Occam's razor
[After William of Ockham, an English philosopher of the fourteenth century.]
parsimony : parcimonie,
épargne; pingrerie
Ockham's
razor :théorie du rasoir d'Ockham
consistant
à toujours préférer le plus
simple (d'après
William of Ockham, philosophe anglais du XIVème siècle)
EXAMPLES
:
The
simpler a theory, the more brilliant is the explanation; this is what Ockham's
razor is all about.
Plus
une théorie est simple, et plus l'explication est lumineuse; voilà ce
que nous dit la théorie du rasoir d'Ockham.
